VIDEO: An Indigenous Stake in Energy

Steve Paikin of TVO and a panel of experts discuss Indigenous ownership of Trans Mountain and how oil and natural gas can be a path to economic reconciliation.

On TVO’s The Agenda, host Steve Paikin discusses Indigenous interest in purchasing ownership stakes in the Trans Mountain Expansion pipeline, and the larger potential for Indigenous communities to partner with Canada’s oil and natural gas industry as a means to reduce on-reserve poverty and achieve economic reconciliation, while balancing environmental concerns. The panel includes Delbert Wapass, former chief, Thunderchild First Nation and head of Project Reconciliation (representing one of three Indigenous groups looking to buy into Trans Mountain); Brian Schmidt, president and CEO of Tamarack Valley Energy; Shannon Joseph, vice-president government relations and Indigenous affairs, CAPP; and Kelsey Leonard, who holds the Banding Post-doctoral Fellowship at McMaster University.
