6 in 10 Canadians say lack of new pipeline capacity a crisis

Angus Reid poll finds a majority of Canadians in every province except Quebec support the need for new pipelines.

New public opinion data by the Angus Reid Institute highlights the need for new pipelines is recognized and supported by a clear majority of Canadians. Across the country, 58 per cent of those polled agreed with the statement “Do you think the lack of new oil pipeline capacity is a crisis?” Support was strongest in Alberta and Saskatchewan, but the majority agreed with the statement in B.C., Ontario and every other province with the exception of Quebec.

Other key findings:

  • About two-thirds of Canadians (65 per cent) say that oil and natural gas is a critical industry for Canada. That was the highest number for seven industries canvassed.
  • 69% say the country will face considerable impact if no new pipeline capacity is built.
  • 53% of Canadians support both the Energy East and TransMountain pipeline projects. Only 19% oppose both projects.

Angus Reid surveyed 4,024 Canadian adults between December 21 and January 3. Read the full survey here.
