In a story on JWN, jwnenergy.com, former Haisla Nation chief and current BC Liberal MLA Ellis Ross pushes back against the recent effort by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to call on the Canadian government to cancel Site C dam, Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and Coastal GasLink natural gas pipeline.
He is quoted saying, “The UN has no frickin’ business talking about what’s happening here. If anything, in terms of Indigenous relationship, Canada’s leading the world.” Ross adds that the UN is condescending in assuming that First Nations in B.C. haven’t done their due diligence on the Coastal GasLink pipeline.
Ross believes the UN committee hasn’t taken into account that most First Nations along the pipeline route have performed their due diligence, support the project and will benefit from it.
And although a group of Wet’suwet’en including a number heredity chiefs have protested against and set up blockades to prevent work on the project, it is noted that all five elected band councils of the Wet’suwet’en do support the project.
