According to Statistics Canada, Canadian businesses reported spending $10.9 billion on environmental protection in 2012 (the latest year for which Statistics Canada has published data). The lion’s share of that spending—$4.7 billion—was by the oil and natural gas industry. About half of this money was spent on capital investment projects: investments designed to improve long-term pollution prevention, abatement and control.
