Environmental Protection: Spending by industry

The oil and natural gas industry accounts for 43 per cent of environmental protection spending, according to data from Statistics Canada.

According to Statistics Canada, Canadian businesses reported spending $10.9 billion on environmental protection in 2012 (the latest year for which Statistics Canada has published data). The lion’s share of that spending—$4.7 billion—was by the oil and natural gas industry. About half of this money was spent on capital investment projects: investments designed to improve long-term pollution prevention, abatement and control.
