VIDEO: Marcius Extavour, Director of Energy at XPRIZE

A chat with Marcius Extavour about the Carbon XPRIZE, innovation and the future of energy

Video transcript:

What’s the best part of your job?

Best part of my job is definitely getting to keep one foot in the scientific community and one foot in the innovation community, and work with amazing, creative people from around the world.

Question 1: What is the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE?

NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE is a global competition that challenges anyone from around the world to come up with new ways of dealing with our CO2 emissions. In particular, it’s a challenge that says, ‘If you’ve got a technology – any approach that can take CO2 and turn it into a valuable product – you could win $20 million.’

Question 2: Do you think a future of low-carbon or carbonless oil and natural gas is possible?

A low-carbon energy future is not only possible, it’s necessary. We have to get there. I don’t know how we’re gonna get there, but I do know that innovation, trying new things and out-of-the-box thinking is the only way we can get there.

Question 3: Why is XPRIZE effective at driving innovation?

I think XPRIZE is great for two reasons. One: we can inspire people to think beyond where they normally get to think, really stretch the boundaries of what could be possible. The second thing is, what we do is just define the problems: We don’t have the answers and we say, ’Look, anyone out there that’s got the answers, we’re inviting you to come and show what you can do and really, help us solve this problem.’

Question 4: Why is XPRIZE focused on energy?

At XPRIZE, we focus on grand challenges, “moon shots”: big, complicated problems that are also big opportunities to have a huge impact and do good for a lot of people. Things like climate change and energy are right in that ballpark. Energy is a huge challenge that touches everyone, but it’s also opportunity – a great opportunity – to really define the kind of future we want to have.

Question 5: What's it been like working with COSIA?

You know, partnering with COSIA has been great for us because I think we have an aligned vision. COSIA is about sharing great ideas that can be spread across a bunch of sectors and a bunch of different players that can really help with environmental performance, and that’s exactly the kind of leadership we want to see from industry. We want our industry to take a leadership role here, to think about innovation, to bring it into their own practice. That’s what we’re about at XPRIZE, and so that means it’s easy to partner with COSIA.
