Tugboats and Oil Tanker Safety

Tugboats ensure safe navigation in busy waters

In the unlikely event a tanker loses power or its steering system malfunctions, a tethered tugboat can slow and stop the vessel or correct its course. Tugs have enough power to stop a fully-loaded oil tanker within 300 metres.

Tankers servicing the West Coast are escorted by two to three tethered tugs through Vancouver Harbour and one tethered tug through the Gulf islands.
