How Canada’s oil price discount is costing Canadians

Low prices for Canadian oil caused by pipeline delays and regulatory uncertainty are impacting quality of life for Canadians.

In October 2018, the gap between the price for Western Canadian oil and global prices (the differential) meant:

  • $30 million per day was being lost to the Canadian economy
  • 9% would be lost from Saskatchewan’s total budget if the current differential holds for a year
  • $210 million a year is lost from the Alberta treasury for every $1 increase in the differential.
