BC Ferries begin using LNG

In 2017, BC Ferries introduced new vessels capable of running on liquefied natural gas and producing fewer GHG emissions.

In 2017, BC Ferries introduced three new Salish Class vessels to its fleet: The Salish Orca, Salish Eagle and Salish Raven. These vessels are capable of running on LNG as a fuel source. According to BC Ferries, the use of natural gas in these vessels results in the reduction of an estimated 9,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year per ferry—which is the same as taking 1,900 passenger vehicles off the road annually (Source: BC Ferries).
