A commentary titled “Move over, Waterloo and Ottawa: Calgary is now out-innovating you” was published on CBC News: the Road Ahead on May 31. The article, based on research by the CD Howe Institute, notes that Calgary now has the highest number of patents per capita, with innovators in Calgary filing patents at triple the rate of the rest of the country.
What’s driving all this innovation? The authors say a lot of it is due to new oil sands technologies, including environmental innovations that reduce the need for water and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They conclude:
“All this has been happening right under our noses, and most Canadians don’t even know it. Calgary’s patent success deserves more attention from around the country.”
