Suncor East Coast Canada won gold in the oil and gas category at the Canada’s Safest Employers awards in October.
“Most of our success last year was working with the front-line folks and refining the risk management tools to make them work for them,” said Mike Doyle, team leader for safety, strategy and operations services at Suncor in St. John’s, N.L., in an interview with Canadian Occupational Safety magazine.
Suncor’s strategies included working directly with front-line workers to develop a pre-job safety planning checklist. They also instituted meetings with workers returning to the job (offshore workers typically rotate three works on the job and three weeks off) to update them about work activities and talk about safety. These meetings help put workers’ minds back on the need for safety. As well, employees have access to on-site health and wellness clinics as well as occupational health monitoring. Flu shot programs, hearing conservation, exercise stress tests, routine blood screening and pulmonic function testing are some of the services available.
