NGIF announces $3 million cleantech funding call

Natural Gas Innovation Fund also announces federal/provincial collaboration to support greenhouse gas reduction in Canada’s natural gas energy system.

The Natural Gas Innovation Fund (NGIF) announced in December the launch of a $3 million funding call for cleantech solutions related to the development and production of natural gas. The call is directed at small to medium enterprises and technology development start-ups with projects to advance cleantech innovation. These innovations should help drive environmental performance and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction in the development and production of natural gas in Canada.

The NGIF is also collaborating on the funding with a number of government partners: Natural Resources Canada, Emissions Reduction Alberta, Alberta Innovates, and the Province of British Columbia. These government partners will co-fund successful NGIF applicants that have projects that can deliver significant GHG emissions reduction within their respective jurisdictions.

Finally, the NGIF announced that seven leading Canadian natural gas producers have joined the fund. These companies will be investing in cleantech innovation in the upstream natural gas sector through NGIF. The companies are: Birchcliff Energy Ltd., Canadian Natural Resources Limited, Chevron Canada Limited, Perpetual Energy Inc., PETRONAS Energy Canada Ltd., Shell Canada Energy, and Tourmaline Oil Corp. The NGIF also has six natural gas utilities currently participating in the fund.

The participation of companies across the entire natural gas value chain demonstrates the strength of commitment to improve environmental performance and GHG reduction in the natural gas industry.

“I am both excited and grateful for the confidence and support as the Natural Gas Innovation Fund welcomes its new investors and trusted partners who are committed to driving cleantech innovation in natural gas production and I look forward to welcoming proposals from innovators,” said John Adams, managing director of NGIF in a release.

NGIF funding can represent as much as 25 per cent of a project’s eligible expenses. The deadline for submissions is February 13, 2019. Interested parties can apply here.

What is the NGIF?

The Natural Gas Innovation Fund (NGIF) was created by the Canadian Gas Association to support cleantech innovation in the natural gas industry, from production and transmission to distribution to local customers. Through funding investments, it supports research related to sustainable production: including lowering greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy efficiency and managing water and air impacts.
