On February 13, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) responded to the recent protests causing rail service disruptions:
“Canada’s multiple rail lines act as important pieces of infrastructure across our country, providing transportation for Canadians every day, delivering essential goods to communities across the map, and providing stable jobs for thousands of Canadians,” said Tim McMillan, president and CEO of CAPP. “More than $300-billion worth of goods are transported on Canada’s rail system each year.”
McMillan added, “It is clear that our railway system is being used as a bargaining chip, with specific groups of protesters creating a dangerous and unfortunate situation – essentially shutting down the railway and trying to shut down Canada. Everyone in this country has the right to peaceful protest and to be heard, but that is not what is happening. These are illegal protests, and the economy and function of our country cannot be held hostage.
“We join with other concerned Canadians and ask all levels of government and law enforcement to bring a swift end to the harmful blockades.”
