Alberta government announces natural gas strategy

Future development and diversification includes plans for low-emissions hydrogen production and plastics recycling.

The Alberta government has released its long-term strategy for natural gas development and use in the province.

Alberta’s Natural Gas Vision and Strategy will build and diversify the province’s natural gas industry, positioning Alberta as a post-pandemic powerhouse for responsible energy development and economic recovery.

The strategy outlines actions to help grow the sector and capitalize on emerging opportunities for low-emission ‘blue’ hydrogen, petrochemical manufacturing, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and plastics reuse and recycling. The government expects that implementing the strategy will revitalize Alberta’s natural gas sector, help to diversify and grow the economy, attract investment and create jobs.

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) is supportive of the strategy, noting, “Natural gas is one of the fastest-growing sources of energy in the world, and demand is expected to grow for decades to come. Alberta is home to some of the world’s cleanest and lowest-cost production and the province should be a global supplier of choice. Leveraging this opportunity will take collaboration among provinces, the federal government and industry. Alberta’s natural gas strategy is a signal that investment is wanted and welcome — a signal vitally important to Canada’s economic future.”
