Canada’s oil and natural gas industry is committed to decreasing the amount of GHG emissions generated for each barrel of oil and cubic metre of natural gas it produces.
It’s important to place this in a global context. As we address emissions in Canada, we also have an opportunity to help reduce global GHGs as an environmentally responsible supplier of choice of oil and natural gas to countries around the world. For example, Canadian natural gas could provide countries like China and India that rely on high emissions coal-generated electricity an affordable and reliable energy alternative. Also, policies to reduce GHGs in Canada must be competitive to prevent carbon leakage to countries without our stringent environmental standards if they are to be effective at a global scale.
