Improvements in energy efficiency and greater use of lower-carbon energy sources will help moderate the growth in global energy demand over the next 20 years.
However as populations grow, and people in developing and newly industrialized nations improve their economic standards and gain many of the health, education and quality of life benefits that affordable energy security provides global energy demand will grow. So the question isn’t which energy sources we should use, but how can we use all our energy sources more sustainably.
