Protecting groundwater during hydraulic fracturing

Depth of resource, regulations and industry best practices ensure groundwater resources are protected during hydraulic fracturing.

Drinking water aquifers are usually found at depths less than 300 metres. A well that is hydraulically fractured is typically drilled at a depth of 2,000 to 3,000 metres, far below any aquifers.

As well, multiple layers of steel casing are inserted and cemented in place to create a solid barrier between the wellbore and any underground water sources.
